This photography hobby of mine is getting out of hand and so I purchased a Spyder3PRO from a store where I ve also bought my gear and they are legit as I ve visited them a couple of times.

I went to install the software however and during the activation process I m told the serial number is already in use error code -5. What the I opened the box only now and it was still sealed. The serial number can t be seen without opening the quick manual so it s not like anybody could ve spotted it from looking at the packaging.

Anybody else ever had this problem with their Spyder3. I ve also got a Spyder2Express and that one worked fine straight away, so it s not like I m trying to bash Datacolor here I ve already opened a ticket with them but I was just wondering if this is a more recurring issue.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, same error

I got in touch with Datacolor and they,mailed me a new serial no straight back, something about a guy in the factory putting the same no on multiple units, not sure about thsat but the new serila no worked a treat.

I guess you will have it sorted by Monday, they are pretty quick to sort the issue.

You do not need the Datacolor software, use Argyll dispcalGUI, they are free and

Hi Pictus, thanks very much for pointing that out. I ve followed your tutorial and you were not kidding when you said that calibration will take a long time. My computer s been busy calibrating my screen for over nearly 90 minutes. I read the review where they said using the freeware tools produce better results, so I don t know how much longer it will take but compared to the 7 minutes of the Spyder3 software, it better be spectacular :-.

a Spyder2 had been removed prior to installation of Spyder3. I also rebooted after deinstallation to make sure it was removed completely.

b I already did install it on my D: drive instead of my C: drive.

c I will try that if by Monday the new serial number doesn t work.

Good to know it s happened before. They should fire the guy that uses the same serials for multiple sensors, grrr ;-. Right now I m calibrating my screen following Pictus guide see his response to this thread but it tooks forever it seems over 90 mins already. I hope it s ready by the time I get my serial from Datacolor ;-.

I just had to cancel the profiling because it appeared stuck on a particular itteration . So after one hour and 45 minutes of profiling, I had to cancel and now I have to retry. I will do that tonight before I go to bed so I don t have to miss my laptop that much.

With Datacolor soft you may get color cast in dark parts with monitors with deep blacks, mainly if using less than 120 cd/m2 of luminosity, it is a hardware limitation, but Argyll retry many times

I just started my second attempt to calibrate the display of my Dell XPS 15 L502x 1080p wide-gamut screen. Apparently it s one of the best screens currently available on laptops, so my hopes are high.

Am I correct to think that I can skip the part about option 2 where I can tweak the RGB channels to match 6500K as much as possible because on a laptop you don t have controls to manually alter those values. So any deviation from 6500K will have to be corrected by the profile. Am I understanding it correctly.

Hi Pictus, yesterday night after more than 2 hours of calibrating/profiling, it was finally completed. Now a more challenging task, calibrating my HP LP2475w which does have RGB controls. And I had changed the White Balance to 6500K per your guide.

I did indeed just get a new serial number without any problems. Shame I don t need it anymore because there are better open-source alternatives.
